Communications Committee
Udai Tambar, Chair
As your Communications Director, I want to help 1) create services to meet the needs of members and 2) communicate these to a broad audience, which will aid in increasing the NYS Young Democrats membership. To accomplish both goals I will need your help. To best leverage your talents and focus your energies, the communications team will be composed of the following committees:
1) Public Affairs: The purpose will be to develop programs and services serving the needs and interests of Young Democrats. Committee members should be interested in policy and current affairs. For example, a recent NY Times article highlighted the flight of young adults from upstate New York, which has a large economic and political impact on the region. How can NYSYD address this topic? Should we plan a panel of elected officials, academics, and advocates? What other issues impact Young Democrats in the State? These are the types of questions the committee will tackle.
2) Newsletter: An e-newsletter will be produced quarterly to highlight the efforts of and improve communications among Young Democrats throughout the State. Committee members should be involved in and aware of activities in their county organizations and/or the various caucuses, and be strong writers. This committee will write the content of the e-newsletters and help design its layout.
3) Message Multimedia (M&M): Members will focus on clearly defining the message NYSYD articulates to all of its constituencies, and ensuring that it aligns with the platforms of kindred organizations (eg, YDA, DNC, and NYS Democratic Agenda). In addition, the committee will determine how to translate this message on the web, which will include strategically thinking of how to position our website. How can we drive more traffic to the website: www.YoungDemsNY.org? Committee members should be familiar with the mission of the NYS Young Democrats and organizations we would want to affiliate with, and be comfortable with developing a communications plan via a website. The Webmaster will also be a member of this committee. The responsibilities and required skills for the webmaster position are here.
Each of these committees will be composed of 10-12 Young Democrats with the appropriate skills and ability to commit as little as one-hour a week to further develop the NYS Young Democrats.
In addition to staffing the above committees, the communications team will also have a Press Secretary. This person will serve on all committees and be responsible for getting NYSYD programs in the media.
If you are interested in serving on any of the committees, as a webmaster, or as a press secretary, please drop me an email if you want to discuss the communications team, or simply chat. udai.tambar@youngdemsny.org
