SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIR

As the Chair of the NY Young Democrats Caucus of Color, I would like to thank the leadership of the New York State Young Democrats for their continued investment in communities of color. The Caucus is the official youth of color arm of the New York State Democratic Party, and serves as a vehicle which allows young people to become tuned in and energized by Democratic Party activities.

As such, the Caucus of Color is developing a number of new initiatives that we hope you will find helpful. First, I am excited to present to you the inaugural issue of the e-newsletter and blog. I hope the newsletter will help keep you informed about the activities of the Caucus and opportunities for you to get involved locally and our blog will provide you with loads of juicy political chat.

Second, we are developing an exciting new social and political networking program to build the skills and networks of all our members. Through our Happy Hour Speaker Series highlighting political and policy leaders from our community and our “day of action” campaigns focusing on voter registration and turnout, I will keep you updated as things develop, and I welcome your feedback.

I look forward to working with everyone in the coming months. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope to see you at our next Happy Hour Speaker Series or featured Caucus event.

-Tara

6 YOUNG POLITICAL LEADERS YOU OUGHTA KNOW
Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) is serving his first full term as a Nassau County Legislator in the 1st Legislative District, after decisively winning his seat by 84 percent of the vote in a special election in September 2002. The youngest legislator ever elected to the Nassau County Legislature at age 27, Abrahams comes to his new position with a wealth of experience gained from serving as the Majority's Finance Director prior to being elected. Abrahams is also the youngest African American lawmaker in the State of New York. On January 4, 2001, the Buffalo Common Council unanimously appointed Antoine Thompson Masten District Council Member (D-Buffalo). He is a member of the Committee on Community Development, and the chair of the Minority Business Enterprise Committee. He is also the chair of the Committee on Education. His primary areas of focus are job creation and economic development, crime and safety, housing, education, youth and senior services.

Mr. Thompson is host of Masten on the Move, a weekly radio broadcast. It is on the radio every Thursday at 2:30 P.M. on 1080 AM.
Former Chief-of-Staff and Legislative Aid to New York City Councilmember Margarita Lopez, now Councilmember Rosie Mendez (D-Lower East Side) is known for her caring response to constituents’ concerns and her mastery of key issues before the Council.

Rosie has been elected as Democratic District Leader for four terms. She has taken a leading role in critical issues in the District, including the Williamsburg Bridge lead paint controversy, the greengrocery workers' struggle for minimum wage pay, the preservation and creation of affordable housing, and the fight against Con Edison’s East River Plant expansion and closing of the Midtown Plant.

Rosie served as the Public Interest Career Counselor at Rutgers Law School-Newark, where she was responsible for assisting a record number of students in obtaining fellowships in non-profits and public interest law firms.
City Councilmember Adam McFadden (D-Rochester) has impressive experience in the fields of business, accounting, financial planning, fund raising, community activism, academic achievement, and cultural awareness.

It is through his experiences that he will provide effective representation for the residents and business owners of Rochester.

Elected in November 2003 to a four-year term as the City of Rochester's South District Councilmember, McFadden has shown tremendous leadership. McFadden is a member of City Council's Parks, Public Works and the Environment Committee, and the Housing and Economic Development Committee.
In February 2001, in a special election in the 15th City Council district in the Bronx, New York City Council Majority Leader Joel Rivera (D-Bronx), a 22-year-old student at Fordham College has been elected to his father's old seat.

The son of former Councilmember and currently State Assemblyman and Bronx Democratic Party leader Jose Rivera, he is a Fordham University student majoring in political science. He has been involved with several community organizations including “Not in My Neighborhood You Don't”, Friends of Crotona Park and Tanima Productions, a youth cultural organization.

Rivera has served two full terms as the New York City Council Majority Leader and now – after his re-election – chairs the powerful Health Committee.
The New York State Legislature is not unfamiliar to NY State Assemblywoman Michele Titus (D-Queens). After law school, Assemblywoman Titus served as Chief of Staff to State Senator Ada L. Smith and then Executive Director to the New York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus.

Prior to her election, Assemblywoman Titus was an attorney for the New York City Board of Education where she specialized in special education law. Other legal experiences include the Consumer Frauds Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the Integrity Bureau at the Queens County District Attorney’s Office.
